How to Become a Lidl US Private Label Supplier
Lidl US is smaller than ALDI, but it is roughly 80% private label and openly looking for suppliers who will grow with it. For the right manufacturer, Lidl can become a top-tier account.
Figures are PLAID Grocery estimates based on public sources (see Sources below), rounded and as of October 2026.
Why Lidl matters
Lidl operates about 200 U.S. stores along the East Coast, run from its U.S. headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. Roughly 80% of its products are private label — brands like Preferred Selection, Favorina and Italiamo — and every private label item is tested for taste and quality.
Every store is on the East Coast — from New York and New Jersey down to Georgia — supplied from four distribution centers in Graham, North Carolina; Fredericksburg, Virginia; Perryville, Maryland; and Covington, Georgia.
The U.S. business has new leadership as of 2026, launched its Lidl Plus loyalty app in July 2026, and continues to open stores in New York, New Jersey and Virginia.
How Lidl buys
Lidl cut its core assortment from about 4,500 items to roughly 3,250, and judges each item on quality, price, rate of sale and whether shoppers need it. Fewer items means more volume per item — and a high bar to earn a slot.
In 2025, Lidl US's then-CEO said the company wants private label suppliers that are "small, growing, hungry" and that will make Lidl one of their top customers, in exchange for long-term contracts and shared investment. That is an opening for mid-sized manufacturers that a larger chain might overlook.
What it's like to supply Lidl
- Low MOQs. Lidl's smaller U.S. footprint means smaller minimum order quantities — a manageable first step into discount grocery.
- Low margin. Like any discounter, pricing is tight.
- Lower competition. Fewer U.S. manufacturers chase Lidl than ALDI.
- An underdeveloped U.S. supply base. Lidl still relies on imports in many areas, which opens the door for domestic manufacturers.
- Global competition in some categories. Expect to be benchmarked against European suppliers.
- Mixed and display-ready cases. Shelf-ready pack-out is the norm.
What Lidl will ask for
- Adherence to the Schwarz Group Business Partner Code of Conduct, which covers Lidl's suppliers, vendors and business partners.
- Product that matches the national brand benchmark — often exactly — and passes Lidl's taste and quality testing.
- Retail EDI capability for orders, ship notices and invoices.
- Pricing that supports Lidl's low-price position over the life of the contract.
Lidl US does not currently publish a supplier application or a public list of certification requirements, so expect food safety certification (typically GFSI-recognized), insurance and packaging terms to be set with the buying team.
Where suppliers stumble
Lidl has no open front door for new suppliers in the U.S., so many manufacturers never reach the right buyer. Others show up with a national-scale pitch when Lidl is looking for a partner that will prioritize it.
